Between Two Memories
2022 Beaux Arts De Paris
In an immersive installation, videos projected onto light veils and heavy broken stones reveal the war documentaries created by Ali Arkady in Iraq and Ukraine. As a photojournalist, the artist did not only document armed conflicts and human suffering—he first lived through it himself, having been forced to flee his native Iraqi homeland.
The juxtaposition of war images from two different countries, Iraq and Ukraine, acts as a mirror reflecting the same face of distress and chaos. These images are both a haunting specter in the mind and a heavy memory to bear, embodied in stone through a technique discovered by the artist.
By combining lithography with photography and video on stone, Ali Arkady invented what he calls monolithography.
